The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, in partnership with the Polish Cultural Council, presents this special event: The past 18 months have brought to the forefront a number of foreign policy challenges for the Obama administration, including the continued management of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, simmering crises in Iran and North Korea, and intense yet productive nuclear diplomacy with Russia. How is America viewed internationally as it confronts these and other critical foreign policy issues? Is the U.S. now considered to be a waning superpower, especially in light of rising powers? Or, is America still seen as a key leader in resolving crises around the globe? Andrew Nagorski, who spent more than three decades as an award-winning foreign correspondent and editor for Newsweek, is currently Vice President and Director of Public Policy at the EastWest Institute in New York. From 2000-2008, Mr. Nagorski served as senior editor for Newsweek International, where he helped launch several new magazines, such as Newsweek Arabic, Newsweek Polska, Newsweek Russia, and Newsweek Argentina. Mr. Nagorski has also served as Newsweek’s bureau chief in Hong Kong, Moscow, Rome, Bonn, Warsaw, and Berlin. In 1982, he gained international notoriety when the Soviet government expelled him from the country for his enterprising reporting. He is the author of several non-fiction books including, The Greatest Battle: Stalin, Hitler, and the Desperate Struggle for Moscow That Changed the Course of World War II. Born in Edinburgh of Polish parents, he attended school overseas while his father was in the U.S. foreign service. Mexico is one of the United States' top trading partners and is a powerful economic force in Latin America. The end of single party rule and steady economic growth have afforded new freedoms and opportunities, but the recent rise in power of domestic drug cartels has created an atmosphere of insecurity and volatility. This, coupled with a difficult recovery from the recent global economic downturn, brings about a number of challenges regarding Mexico's economic future. How will Mexico respond to these challenges? What are the implications for U.S.-Mexico relations? Dr. Arnulfo Valdivia Machuca, Chief of International Affairs of the State of Mexico, has been a Political Adviser to the Governor of the State of Mexico and has served as Honorary Representative of the State of Mexico in Europe and the United Kingdom. He has also served as an independent adviser to the Secretary of Economic Development of the Government of the State of Mexico, the European Union, and several Mexican political parties. Dr. Machuca is currently the President of the Regional Advisory Council for the National Immigration Institute in the State of Mexico. Despite recent declines in oil prices, energy continues to be an important topic in our nation's dialogue. Given our region's past and future ties to the energy sector, this topic is of great interest locally as well. From the economy to global environmental challenges, energy issues are complex, ever-changing, and influence almost every aspect of our lives. What roles will renewable fuel sources as well as oil and natural gas play as our nation -- along with the international community -- looks to meet energy demands? Sara Banaszak is a senior economist at the American Petroleum Institute (API) where she draws on her oil and natural gas policy expertise in both domestic and international arenas. Prior to joining API in 2005, Sara directed PFC Energy’s North American Gas Policy Service (GPS) and worked at the U.S. Department of Energy as a manager responsible for international and domestic oil and gas programs, including policy-making activities. In the Office of Fossil Energy, she acted as a government representative on the National Petroleum Council’s 2003 natural gas study. In 2001, she received Department recognition for her accomplishments with the U.S.-China Oil and Gas Industry Forum, a high-level public-private partnership. She is a member of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), an executive board member of its Washington, D.C. chapter, and a referee for The Energy Journal. Sara holds a master’s degree in applied economics from the University of Hawaii and a bachelor’s degree cum laude in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania. Global Beats will provide a night of world music in an outdoor environment as part of PUMP’s Stay and Play Fridays. Javier García is a young artist born in Spain from a Cuban father and an Irish mother who made Miami his home at the age of fifteen. In 1997, García got many gold records in Latin America upon the release of “Tranquila”, his very first song. His latest release titled “13” feels like classical Cuban son, but is a hybrid where everything has its place and nothing sounds forced, be it boogaloo, rumba, son, hip hop, reggae, ska, Haitian compass, bossa nova, boleros, flamenco guitars or pure American funk. Javier’s video clips such as Rumba or Me Gustaria can be seen on MTV in Spanish. At the heart of Nation Beat lies the merging of Maracatú, from the northeast of Brazil, with New Orleans second line rhythms, funk, rock, and country-blues. Since recording their first CD, Nation Beat has recruited Brazilian vocalist Liliana Araújo, whose rich, earthy voice brings a powerful shot of soulful authenticity to their music and a definite Brazilian touch to their stage presentation. Their magnetic performance and pure Brazilian percussion magic transports the audience to the streets of Pernambuco, Brazil. Carla Andrea Leininger, founder of Global Beats, states that “this will be an excellent opportunity for Pittsburgh to experience the essence of Global Beats, a night of various music genres fused together.” According to Leininger, Global Beats on its regular Saturday nights tends to attract a young and eclectic audience who wants to be exposed to something different. On June 27th, however, Global Beats will debut outdoors for the first time with live music hoping to create cutting-edge world music party on the streets. “It will be a dream come true to bring a bit of Brazilian Carnaval, the biggest street party in the world, to Pittsburgh. Nation Beat and Javier Garcia have the right sound and the dynamic performances to create such an atmosphere. PUMP has the young professional membership that may just be looking for a distinctively groovy event. It’s a win-win situation for both organizations. In Cooperation with the American Council on Germany Pittsburgh Eric M. Warburg Chapter Sponsored by the Carnegie Bosch Institute America faces a world more complicated than ever before. Our foreign policy should reflect the times, recognizing our real strengths and weaknesses and the changing dynamics around us. Speaker: David Cortright, President of Fourth Freedom Forum Concerns about the perils posed by nuclear weapons have focused primarily on the spread of the bomb–to North Korea, Pakistan, India, and perhaps Iran–and on the terrifying prospect that Al Qaeda might acquire such weapons. Nuclear dangers, however, are not only "out there," they also exist in the policies of the United States and Russia, which continue to maintain thousands of nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert. Meanwhile, glimmers of hope for a denuclearized future have recently appeared in North Korea and in a bipartisan statement from former senior US policymakers calling for "a world free of nuclear weapons." At this event David Cortright will examine the nuclear danger and probe the sources of instability that are driving proliferation and continued reliance on nuclear weapons. He will also offer practical directions toward realizing a future without nuclear weapons, including the key role of citizen involvement. For complete details about this event, click here. African Studies Spring Symposium: Information Technology and Transformation in Africa Date: April 4, 2008 - University of Pittsburgh, 1700 Wesley Posvor Hall Information Transformation in Africa: Indigenous Knowledge, Information and Communication Technologies, and Libraries,” African Studies Program, UCIS, University of Pittsburgh, April 4-5, 2008; cosponsored by School of Information Science (Pitt) and School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee The global digital divide between the West and the developing world, particularly Africa, perpetuates inequality. For example, it is estimated that about 70 percent of people in North America and Western Europe use the internet on a regular basis whereas the corresponding figure for Africa is less than 4 percent. And yet, information technology impacts education, business, health services, government, and life in general. How can the developing world catch up on access to and use of information technology resources? How can digital resources be applied to make more efficient service delivery in education, business, health, and government in Africa? Isn’t the control of the global information system by the rich and powerful countries and the relative poverty of digital resources in Africa a question of social justice? How might intellectual property rights protect Africa’s indigenous knowledge forms? Join us as we interrogate these and other related questions in our symposium, “Information Transformation in Africa.” The keynote will be Dr. Kay Raseroka, Director of Library Services, University of Botswana, and past president of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Historically, Pittsburgh’s wealth and economy, like most other US cities, was built with the help of a vast pool of immigrant workers. Now we rank 49th out of the top 50 metro areas in the U.S. in percentage of the population who are foreign born and have completed a college degree. Is Pittsburgh ready to focus on immigration? Will we be left behind if we don’t? How do we jumpstart it? Our moderator is Sunil Wadhwani, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of iGATE Corporation, a global business with over 6,000 employees that service over 200 major clients on four continents. Panelists include James P. Smith, who holds the chair in labor markets and demographic studies at Rand Corp, Khadra Mohammed, the executive director of the Pittsburgh Refugee Center and James F. Kenney, Philadelphia’s Councilman-at-Large. Bring your questions and ideas and bring your energy. Cocktails and conversation to follow. Date: May 10, 2007 Noon - 1:45pm Duquesne Club, Main Dining Room, 325 Sixth Avenue, Downtown Pittsburgh Speaker: Ambassador Christopher Hill, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Head of U.S. Delegation to the Six-Party Talks In mid-February, North Korea agreed to shut down, seal, and eventually abandon its Yongbyon nuclear facility, working toward the dismantling of its entire nuclear program in return for more fuel oil, aid, and better relations with the U.S. and Japan. What is being seen by many as an important step in curbing North Korea's nuclear program was a result of long and difficult negotiations. Heading the U.S. delegation to the Six-Party Talks in this effort was the chief U.S. envoy, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, who has an up-close and personal perspective on this multilateral deal. Ambassador Hill was sworn-in as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in April of 2005, following service as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he has also served as Ambassador to Poland and to Macedonia, Special Envoy to Kosovo, and as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Southeast European Affairs in the National Security Council. Ambassador Hill received the State Department’s Distinguished Service Award for his contributions as a member of the U.S. negotiating team in the Bosnia peace settlement, and was a recipient of the Robert S. Frasure Award for Peace Negotiations for his work on the Kosovo crisis. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ambassador Hill served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon. Click here for complete program details Contact: World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh Noon Briefing Series: Energy, Breaking America’s Oil Addiction Date: April 19, 2007 Noon - 1:00pm DoubleTree Hotel, One Bigelow Square, Downtown Pittsburgh
Speaker: Christopher Flavin, President, Worldwatch In his 2007 State of the Union Address, President Bush said, “For too long our nation has been dependent on foreign oil. This dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes and to terrorists—who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments, raise the price of oil, and do great harm to our economy.” Across the political divide, Americans are forming a broad coalition to tackle the problems that accompany our nation’s dependence on oil. Reducing that dependence on oil and developing alternative energy sources can serve our national security interests, economic interests, and our environmental interests. Christopher Flavin has helped guide the Institute’s development, serving as vice president for research and later as senior vice president. He is actively engaged in international climate change and energy policy discussions, and is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. Mr. Flavin is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Energy and Environmental Systems, the Climate Institute, and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
