[Go to Срби] Overview
From National Hall of Inventors Famer Nikola Tesla, Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Pupin, WWII Congressional Medal of Honor Awardee Mitchell Paige, basketball great Pistol Pete Maravich, to the Zernich/Kavic/Generalovich Medical family dynasties, U.S Army General George Karamarkovich, and world famous Architects Lou and Dennis Astorino, all shared/share Serbian ancestry and connections to the Greater Pittsburgh area. So welcome! Dobro nam dosli! You’re in good company!
Many of the early 18th and 19th century Serbian Orthodox pioneers in America immigrated to the Pittsburgh area from the Lika and Kordun areas of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire to seek their fortunes in the steel mills, coal mines, railroads, agricultural pursuits and entreprenership. A large majority of the steel working families settled in the “Flats” of today’s South Side, found in huge concentrations from 20th to 32nd streets. Once one family got settled, it arranged for other family members to come from the "Old Country."
Today, our strong-work-ethic and vibrant Serbian Americans of Pittsburgh are leading the country as robotic engineers, university professors, pharmacists, poets, authors & playwrights, beloved teachers, chief operating officers of large corporations, and very dedicated, philanthropic businessmen and women.
The first Serbian Orthodox Church was founded in McKeesport in 1901, and quickly other parishes were established in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The Serbian Orthodox Church is the center of community life. It is here that one finds the choir, dance groups, and ladies and men's auxiliaries. These groups not only support the religious purposes of the church, but they also provide the impetus for the social life of its members. Concerts, dances, picnics and holiday celebrations all provide reasons to gather, to maintain, and perpetuate Serbian and Orthodox traditions. At any celebration, be it individual family or entire church community, you will find traditional foods and music as well as continued respect for the ancestral ways of doing these celebrations. And YOU are welcomed to share in the joy and celebration! Dobro Nam Dosli! Welcome!
