Jobs in the Region

The employment picture in Southwestern Pennsylvania is certain to be favorable in the coming decades. As with the nation as a whole, our region will be affected by the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. A recent study by the Center for Competitive Workforce Development at Duquesne University highlights that our labor force currently numbers 1.25 million people, 11% of whom will be retiring within 10 years. More than a third, or about 425,000 individuals, will cross the retirement threshold within 20 years. In order to replace those leaving the labor force, the region will need 125,000 workers in a decade, and over 400,000 in two decades.

These figures assume no growth in the economy. Even very modest rates of growth, such as 1% per year, will result in the creation of new jobs that will call for even larger numbers of workers. More favorable scenarios show the region catching up with the leading metropolitan areas in the nation and producing even greater opportunities for those interested in living in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
