Regional Employment Resources

The employment picture in Southwestern Pennsylvania is certain to be favorable in the coming decades. As with the nation as a whole, our region will be affected by the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. A recent study by the Center for Competitive Workforce Development at Duquesne University highlights that our labor force currently numbers 1.25 million people, 11% of whom will be retiring within 10 years. More than a third, or about 425,000 individuals, will cross the retirement threshold within 20 years. In order to replace those leaving the labor force, the region will need 125,000 workers in a decade, and over 400,000 in two decades.
These figures assume no growth in the economy. Even very modest rates of growth, such as 1% per year, will result in the creation of new jobs that will call for even larger numbers of workers. More favorable scenarios show the region catching up with the leading metropolitan areas in the nation and producing even greated opportunities for those interested in living in Southwestern Pennsylvania. __________________________________________

Industrial Scientific Corporation is a global leader in designing, manufacturing, selling and servicing gas monitoring instruments, systems and related products to protect and preserve human life. With continuous improvements in engineering and R&D, lean manufacturing operations and expanded service capabilities, Industrial Scientific is widely known for providing rugged, dependable products that excel in monitoring hazardous gases in the most demanding work environments in the world. All around the globe, thousands of people are literally putting their lives in our hands at this very moment. It’s a sobering thought. It’s also a daunting challenge. But it’s a challenge we eagerly embrace at Industrial Scientific. Our goal, ever since our founding in 1985, has been to deliver the highest quality gas monitoring solutions for the protection of life and property. We have consistently achieved this goal, but only because of the outstanding efforts of our dedicated employees and the excellent service they provide. Our most cherished management principle states, “We believe that good financial performance is the result of doing the right things for employees first, customers second, and shareholders third.” One important thing we’ve learned is that if a company is going to operate under an employees first philosophy, then the company must hire great employees. We work hard to hire the best people. We then give them the best tools in the world today…hardware, software, facilities, training, and management support. Then we ask them to do their best work for our customers. The secret to this principle is that it actually results in putting our customers first. We pledge to our customers that every employee will possess the best professional qualifications in their field and serve them with enthusiasm, competence and honesty. Whether they design, build, or service their equipment, they will do so with the understanding that human life is at stake. Employing over 850 people, Industrial Scientific is headquartered in an advanced ISO 9001:2000-certified facility near the Pittsburgh International Airport. Industrial Scientific has manufacturing operations based in Pittsburgh (USA), Arras (France), Dortmund (Germany) and Shanghai (China), provides technical services to customers from local service centers around the world, and has additional subsidiaries in Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Dubai, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
