GlobalPittsburgh hosted a delegation from Papua New Guinea for the International Visitor Leadership Program focused on AI and Technology in Journalism from August 20–26, 2026. The group included journalists, editors, and media professionals exploring how artificial intelligence, digital tools, and changing business models are reshaping journalism while raising new questions around ethics, accuracy, press freedom, and public trust.
Participants met with Point Park University’s School of Communication to discuss journalism education, ethics, and preparing reporters for a rapidly evolving media environment. They also visited the Indiana Gazette to learn how AI is being incorporated into newsroom operations and met with the Pittsburgh Media Partnership to explore strategies for sustaining local journalism, strengthening regional reporting, and engaging communities in the digital age.
At Duquesne University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law, delegates discussed the First Amendment, freedom of expression, and legal protections for the press in the United States. Meetings with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh City Paper, and Local Matters TK provided insight into the financial pressures facing local news organizations and new nonprofit and community-centered models for sustaining independent journalism.
Beyond the professional program, delegates participated in home hospitality with GlobalPittsburgh volunteers, explored Pittsburgh’s cultural attractions, and visited the Heinz History Center. The program combined professional exchange with cultural experiences while building connections around responsible technology use, media sustainability, and the future of journalism.
